Tasting Notes

Deep mid-red in colour with ruby tones, the raspberry, blood plum Franc character dominates the nose and palate of this wine. Three years maturation results in supple, enveloping tannins that provide structure without aggression. These supple tannins, which are fine and almost powdery, combined with the lifted sweet fruit character have given us an Alchemy which is more approachable than the still quite tight 2005. Drink to 2016+.

Canobolas-Smith Wines

The Smith family established Canobolas-Smith Wines in 1986 after a detailed site selection search by winemaker and viticulturist, Murray Smith. The unirrigated vineyard of eight hectares is at an elevation of 800m on the northern slopes of Mt. Canobolas, the dramatic and defining extinct volcano just west of Orange in NSW. The average annual rainfall is 850mm and snow falls each winter. The soil is a free-draining clay loam derived from basalt. The ageworthiness of these wines is astonishing, with no greater example than the 1991 Cabernets. “Alchemy” and “Shine” wines deserve their iconic status, though each tier represents amazing value. These are wines of great personality; interest; and scarcity.
