Tasting Notes

According to Stephen George: “The ‘Reserve’ is from our own vineyard, and in 2009 like the Estate wine is made from all 18 of our Pinot clones, instead of just two. It was matured in 100% new French oak barriques and a third is kept as whole bunches. It is designed to be the longest living of our pinots and is best drunk after at least 5 years. Bottled under Stelvin (screwcap) closure.

Notes on the 2008:

“Relatively light, but bright, hue; fractionally more purple than the Estate; very stylish, and in the mainstream of the Ashton Hills style, with spices and savoury notes surrounding the plum and black cherry fruit. Trophy Adelaide Hills Wine Show '09. Screwcap.” One of the ‘Best of the Best by variety’ and 96 points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2011

“This release of Ashton Hills Reserve Pinot Noir was a trophy winner at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show. Easy to taste why. Awesome. Floored me from the first sip. Gloriously expressive, but characterized by its long, smoky, stalky, minerally length. Has precision written all over it. Lots of upfront flavour, but it then drills on and on. Perfect tannin structure...this is a brilliant wine." 96 points - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Ashton Hills

Ashton Hills Vineyard lies below the summit of Mount Lofty on a ridge-top overlooking the Piccadilly Valley. Here in the Adelaide Hills, the cool, yet sunny and humid climate produces crisp, finely flavoured table and sparkling wines. Stephen George established his vineyard in 1981 and produced his first wines in 1987. His wines are very French in style, especially the Pinot Noirs for which Stephen is most highly regarded. The Galah range is Stephen's second label with fruit sourced from the Clare Valley and Mount Lofty Ranges.
