Clearly a brilliant vintage for this wine. Powerful yet supple and fleshy. The tannins are there but are ultra fine and are wonderfully balanced by the seductive fruit. Pure, supple and long. This is the largest and therefore the best known wine of the Estate with some 2,000 cases produced.

This Nebbiolo is from a single vineyard, with vines ranging from 10 to 60 years old, in Barbaresco. 100% Nebbiolo, it is aged for 12 months in large oak casks, and has lots of density, structure and pungent, complex fruit. Much more powerful than the 2008, this impressive mini Barbaresco represents a terrific value.

This is a dangerously drinkable wine! A blend of 80% Nebbiolo, 10% Barbera and 10% Cabernet Franc, it is an incredibly well priced example of Piemonte wine. As it is not 100% Nebbiolo, it cannot be labelled Barbaresco. On the other hand it could be labelled Nebbiolo d'Alba, but (and here's an insight into the integrity of the man) Angelo Rocca isn't comfortable labelling any wine that isn't 100% Nebbiolo as 'Nebbiolo' even though the law permits it. Only 900 cases produced.

The wine comes from the Massolino's 2.2 hectare Barbera vineyard in Serralunga where the vines are between 10 and 35 year of age. It has a super-sexy, perfumed, pulpy, open, mouth-filling yet fresh and ultra refined personality with lots of fruit pure, blueberry and brown spice notes. Matured solely in stainless steel tanks, this is a bright, refreshing red that leaps out the glass.

This Barolo comes exclusively from the Massolino family's Serralunga vineyards and is an outstanding Barolo at a very fair price. It has an attractive aromatic profile as well as a beautifully textured palate with remarkable clarity, purity and ultra fine, ripe tannins. It spent 24 months in large Slovenian oak yet is still very bright, highly refined and simply delicious.

"The 2007 Barolo is a gorgeous wine. An expressive, open-knit bouquet leads to ripe red fruit in a soft, mid-weight Barolo. This is a relatively feminine, approachable Barolo from Serralunga that should drink nicely right out of the gate. This wine comes from a recently acquired parcel of land in Castiglioni Falletto - the commune near the geographical centre of Barolo. These wines are generally softer and slightly more forward with sweeter tannins than those of Serralunga.

"The estate's 2007 Barolo Parussi is a new wine from a recently acquired parcel in Castiglione Falletto and is the only Massolino Barolo not from Serralunga. A delicate, feminine Barolo, the Parussi flows with silky, perfumed red berries. Silky tannins frame the juicy finish. The Parussi has a lot in common with the fragrant Barolos from Castiglione's top vineyards, including Monprivato and Rocche. It is a fabulous first effort. The Vigna Rionda vineyard is considered one of the top vineyards (if not the top vineyard) of Serralunga d'Alba. The soil is calcarious and less clayey than many neighbouring vineyards, contributing to the structure and longevity of Vigna Rionda wines.

My first note upon tasting this recently was "Put in cellar". Even though it is released after six years it will only open up now slowly, and after decanting. Pure Barolo with very fine tannins, it cries out for red meat or game.

A striking, highly aromatic "mini Barolo" made from fruit exclusively from Massolino's vineyards in Serralunga. The fruit comes from the younger Nebbiolo vines of the Estate (under 30 years of age). It could be legally labelled "Barolo" but Massolino prefer to declassify it as "Langhe" resulting in a stunning bargain. Hand harvested and matured in large format, 3,000lt, oak barrels, it shows many of the hallmarks of an excellent Barolo at a fraction of the price. With wonderful fragrance and purity it's a fleshy and elegant wine that is generous in the mouth with a fresh, finely flowing and structured finish. Simply a steal.
