Trophy - Champion Wine of Show; Trophy - Best Chardonnay: Tasmanian Wine Show. Halliday 96 points. RRP $49.99
Fruit for the 2010 Heemskerk Chardonnay is sourced from Tolpuddle vineyard in the Coal River Valley. It's a north-east facing site with 19 year old vines on the upper slope of the vineyard. The fruit is hand picked before being whole bunch pressed, with fermentation taking place in 100% French oak barrels. The wine remained on lees in barrel with regular stirring to add complexity, palate weight and texture.
The aromas are initially intricately woven and layered but with time (and air) unravel to reveal notes of red grapefruit, toasted almond, nougat, peach and lime leaf with a hint of flinty sulfide hovering underneath the pristine fruit.
On the palate, the wine is instantly luscious and mouthfilling with peach flesh, lemon rind and biscuit dough. Battonage and lack of fining has added another dimension with the creaminess of the yeast and oak being tightened by the lemon-pith phenolics.
Halliday Note:
It’s not often that a wine receives 19/19/18.5 out of 20 from three judges before there is any discussion. Made from grapes grown on the mature Tolpuddle Vineyard, a vineyard purchased by Shaw & Smith in 2011. This is pure Tasmania, acidity woven through the wine from go to whoa: oak and extended lees contact have provided a gloss of creamy/ nutty nuances to the spine of grapefruit and white peach. It is a wine of extreme purity, drive and length.
